A 23-year-old man was shot and killed at the party, and five others - including a 7-year-old girl - are being treated for gunshot wounds. The girl was shot multiple times. Their conditions are currently unknown.
The shooting happened during a “celebration of life” party for a man who was buried on Wednesday. The individual died in a car accident.
Police said the shooter had not been apprehended and have little is known about the suspect.
Tulare police Sergeant Ed Hinojosa described the scene to the Fresno Bee.
“Upon arrival, the scene was chaotic. People were running in every direction, some trying to attend to family members who had been struck,” Mr Hinojosa said.
Mr Hinojosa said the entire police department was contributing to the investigation. Though motives are currently unknown, he said there is some suspicion of gang activity.
“We believe that it may be gang related, though it’s unclear of the affiliation,” he said.
