Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Rodney King has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Southern California.

Mr King, 46, was the black motorist whose beating by four white police officers in 1991 exposed racial wounds and led to devastating riots in Los Angeles.

The Moreno Valley Police Department said officers pulled King over on Tuesday night after seeing him commit several alleged traffic violations. Courtney Donowho, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Sheriff, said no arraignment date had been set.

A member of the public had filmed the attack on Mr King in 1991 and then passed on the footage; the video showed the police officers beating Mr King with a baton when he was lying on the ground.

Mr King has had several scrapes with the law in the 20 years since the incident and has struggled publicly with sobriety by appearing on the reality show Celebrity Rehab.
