Footage of the incident showed the creature ramming the driver’s side door, smashing the vehicle before it moved behind it and repeatedly tried to get under and overturn it.
The family said they felt “strong emotions” during the attack, but it was a day which they would not soon forget.
Video of the 30 July incident taken by Luis Angel Gonzalez, shows three employees from the Africam Safari park in Puebla, Mexico watching as the attack unfolds.
The rhino keeps trying to charge the car as it drives away, until eventually the park wardens are able to distract it.
Officials later said the incident was sparked when the large male caught wind of a female partner ready to mate.
However, a statement from the park added that it was an isolated incident and the animals have been separated until she is no longer in heat.
“The necessary measures were taken immediately so that this does not happen again,” it said.
Despite the shock of the attack and the damage to their vehicle, the park added that the family had told them it was “a good experience that they will never forget”.
