Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law, the voice of fiery al-Qa’ida propaganda videotapes after the September 11 attacks, has been convicted in New York of conspiring to kill Americans in his role as the terror group’s spokesman.

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, 48, a Kuwaiti imam, is the highest-ranking al-Qa’ida figure to face trial on US soil since the attacks.

Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said: “He was more than just Osama bin Laden’s propaganda minister. Within hours after the devastating 9/11 attacks, Abu Ghaith was using his position in al-Qa’ida’s homicidal hierarchy to persuade others to pledge themselves to al-Qa’ida in the cause of murdering more Americans.”

Abu Ghaith will be sentenced in September.
