An Oregon pig farmer has been found guilty this week of killing two men and feeding the bodies to her pigs, after jurors deliberated for only an hour.
Susan Monica was convicted by a jury in Jackson County, Oregon and sentenced to a minimum of 50 years in prison, according to the Medford Mail Tribune.
She killed 59-year-old Stephen Delicino in 2012 and 56-year-old Robert Haney in 2013 before feeding the corpses to the pigs on her farm, the jury decided.
Monica’s explanations of what happened were not consistent and did not match forensic evidence, according to reports.
She told investigators that Mr Delicino shot himself multiple times in the head, before later saying she shot him in self-defence. Monica also said that her pigs ate him before she could bury him on her 20-acre farm.
As for Mr Haney, Monica told authorities that he disappeared on her farm in 2013 and when she found him a month later he was being eaten by her pigs, so she shot him to relieve him of his misery. Later she could not decide if he was alive when she shot him.
The defence argued that no evidence to refute that Monica had shot Mr Delicino in self-defence or the dispute her claim that Mr Haney got lost on her farm and was being eaten by the pigs.
One witness, Monica’s cellmate, told the court that she received a birthday car from Monica signed “from the sweetest murderer in Jackson County”.
The jury evidently agreed with the word “murderer” and found her guilty of the crimes earlier this week.
