President Barack Obama has begun a three-day bus tour of North Carolina and Virginia, to promote a jobs programme and shore up support in states wrested from Republicans three years ago.
His 2008 wins were attributed largely to the states' changing demographics and his ability to boost poll turnout by young people and African-Americans. Now his ratings there are sagging, in a national trend. AP
