Northern Arizona University shooting: Gunman in custody after killing one person and injuring three more

The gunman opened fire in a car park outside student halls in the early hours of this morning

At least one person has died and three people were wounded after a gunman opened fire at an Arizona college.

The shooting started at Northern Arizona University’s Flagstaff campus, where 25,000 students are enrolled, in the early hours of Friday morning.

An unidentified attacker opened fire in a car park outside Mountain View Hall dormitory at 1:20am PST.

A spokesperson for the university said the suspected shooter had been arrested and was in custody. He was later identified as 18-year-old Steve Jones.

“The three victims are being treated at the Flagstaff Medical Center,” he added. “Campus is not on lockdown.”

Mountain View Hall can house up to 574 students, according to the university’s website, and is the hub of the Greek community on campus.

It comes just eight days after a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College, where a gunman killed nine people before dying in a shoot-out with police.

The massacre in Oregon turned scrutiny on US gun controls once again, following a series of high profile attacks including on black members of a church in Charleston and at a cinema in Lafayette.
