Two people have died and several others were injured in a shooting at a Walmart Supercentre store in North Dakota, according to police, who say the gunman is believed to be among the dead.

Police responded to the Walmart store in Grand Forks, North Dakota around 1 am on Tuesday. Lieutenant Derik Zimmel said the shooter was the only one who had a gun and that officers did not fire a shot, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Lt Zimmel said that one other person had been taken to the hospital with injuries, though they are not life-threatening. Police continue to investigate the shooting.

The names of the people involved have not been released, though the Grand Forks Air Force Base released a statement saying an airman was involved but did not elaborate.

After officers responded to the shooting, a SWAT team arrived and secured a car in the parking lot, using a robot to search the vehicle, local media reported.
