Two people were killed – one of them the gunman – after shots rang out in a home supplies store in the centre of New York. Reports said the gunman was a disgruntled employee who shot a manager.

Droves of shoppers ran for cover after gunfire erupted at the Home Depot store in the Chelsea neighbourhood, the New York Post reported.

Reports said the armed employee walked into the branch the store on Sunday and fatally shot his manager before killing himself amid scores horrified colleagues and shoppers

The manager was taken to the city’s to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, authorities said. He later died there.

“I heard about some shots towards the back of the store. It sounded like 4 or 5 shots,” said one employee. “I heard someone yell, ‘Oh, my God, he’s dead’. It was on the main floor near the lighting department.”
