Four people died following a shooting involving the police on Tuesday morning in Henderson, Nevada, law enforcement officials said.

Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, police received a 911 call from someone at an apartment complex in Henderson, about 16 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The caller reported hearing gunfire and seeing someone with a possible gunshot wound.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found two people suffering gunshot wounds, as well as a "possible suspect" sitting in a nearby car, according to Henderson police captain Jason Kuzik.

"Officers attempted to contact this individual and this contact resulted in an officer-involved shooting," Mr Kuzik said. He did not disclose why officers believed that person was a possible suspect, or how many officers opened fire.

Police said four people died, including the possible suspect fatally shot by officers. The condition of a fifth person who was injured and taken to a hospital wasn't immediately known, Mr Kuzik told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

The incident is still under investigation.
