From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A woman accused of killing her children said she did it so they could go to a “better place”.

Amber Pasztor, a mother-of-two from Indiana, admitted to smothering her children in an interview with television station WANE and claimed she did it so they could go to heaven.

Pastzor said she gave her seven-year-old, Liliana Hernandez, and six-year-old, Rene Pastzor, the choice of life or death and they opted to be killed.

"I gave them a choice. That they could live, traumatised like their mum, or they can go to heaven with God and be better off," she said in the interview.

“They were in good hands but I don’t think they were safe. My kids are in a better place… they’re in heaven now. They don’t have no worries no more.”

Pasztor, who gave the interview over video chat from Elkhart County Jail, said her children fought back as she smothered them.

She claims she killed her daughter first and her son "wanted to go with her".

Pasztor had kidnapped them from her father's home and decided to kill the children when she first heard a police alert had been issued over their disappearance, she revealed in the interview.

After killing the pair, she drove a stolen car to the Elkhart Police Department where she told an officer what had happened.

She also admitted to fatally shooting her 65-year-old neighbour, Frank Macomber. Pasztor said she made the plan days beforehand and had arranged to go camping and have sex with Mr Macomber.

Pasztor said she shot him with his own gun in a wooded area and then stole his car. She claims to have dumped the gun in a river and used the car to kidnap her children, according to the Washington Post.

“I aimed the gun one time and shot him,” Pasztor reportedly said. “I don’t even know how I had an aim in me like that, but I did. I’m not proud of it.”

She has not been charged with Macomber’s death but faces two charges of murdering her children in Elkhart County.
