From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

A second former Mexican president has compared US presidential hopeful Donald Trump to Hitler, accusing him of racism and ‘exploiting feelings like Hitler did’.

Felipe Calderon’s comments, which came at an event in Mexico City on 27 February, follow those of fellow Mexican former premier Vicente Fox, who said the billionaire mogul "reminds me of Hitler’.

“This logic of praising the white supremacy is not just anti-immigration,“ Calderon told Reuters. ”He is acting and speaking out against immigrants that have a different skin colour than he does, it is frankly racist and [he is] exploiting feelings like Hitler did in his time.”

Mr Trump has previously angered Mexicans by suggesting the US should build a ‘great, great wall’ funded by Mexico to prevent people from crossing the border illegally, also stating the country was not ‘sending the right people’.

“[Mexico] are sending people that have lots of problems, and they are bringing those problems to us. They are bringing drugs, and bringing crime, and their rapists,” Mr Trump had said during his presidential announcement speech.

Mr Fox also took a swipe at Mr Trump’s border plans, stating Mexico would not ‘pay for that f***ing wall’, suggesting Trump should fund it if he wants to build it.

He added: ““Please, you Hispanics, Latinos in the US, open your eyes. It’s not to defend our race. Not to defend our creed. It’s to defend this very same nation that is hosting you. This nation is going to fail if it goes into the hands of a crazy guy.”

Mr Trump was quick to respond to Mr Fox, tweeting: “FMR PRES of Mexico, Vincente Fox horribly used the F word when discussing the wall. He must apologize! If I did that there would be a uproar! (sic).”
