At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. So when it was reported a sinkhole had appeared outside Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, people had a tough time controlling their excitement. It did not matter that the sinkhole was actually rather small, more a hole-let, or a sinkpuddle. Or even a floathole.
“A 4’ x 4’ sinkhole has formed on Southern Boulevard directly in front of Mar-a-Lago,” read a traffic alert from the town of Palm Beach.
“It appears to be in the vicinity of the newly installed water main. West Palm Beach Utilities distribution crews have secured the area and will most likely need to do some exploratory excavation today.”
The Palm Beach Post said a worker on scene said that crews cut around the sinkhole and will dig to find the problem. It is unclear how long that will take.
Some Twitter users have flooded the internet with jokes about the hole. "The swamp is draining?" one person quipped, while another posted "Breaking: God sends really obvious sign".
