A man has fallen to his death at San Francisco airport, authorities said.

The victim plunged from the mezzanine level into the baggage area multiple stories below.

At around 8:45 am, the man “fell from the mezzanine level in Terminal 3 down to the baggage claim level”, airport spokesman Doug Yakel said in an email.

How the fall occurred is currently under investigation, Mr Yakel said.

The victim was identified by the San Mateo Coroner’s office as 53-year-old Dale Finn, a resident of South San Francisco.

San Francisco International Airport is a busy transit hub, with some 55 million travellers passing through over the course of last year.
