Luis Moux was arrested in August after telling police he put Stanley Washington, 43, into a deadly chokehold after waking up to find the 43-year-old beating his mother.
The 18-year-old said he held onto Washington for two minutes until he “went to sleep”, reports the New York Daily News.
But court officials said a grand jury in New York had declined to prosecute the 200lb high school football player.
Water Fields, Mr Moux’s lawyer, said “it was clear that Luis didn’t do anything wrong”.
“He’s going to move on with his life. When you are an innocent man, you just want to move on with your life,” he added.
Police said the mother’s ex-boyfriend turned up at the family’s Bronx apartment at 4.30am on 14 August and allegedly beat the 37-year-old.
Mr Moux heard what was happening, rushed out of his bedroom to pull Washington off his mother before choking the man to death.
The mother, who had passed out, woke to the sight of her son standing over her ex-boyfriend, reports Pix 11.
Washington had been arrested dozens of times in the past, including for two incidents of domestic violence against Mr Moux’s mother.
