From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A California teen has finished the week more than half a million dollars richer, after winning the state lottery not once, but twice.

Nineteen-year-old Rosa Dominguez recently stopped at a gas station in Paso Robles, California on her drive home from Arizona. The teenager decided to test her luck at the lottery, and purchased a few $5 scratch cards.

To her surprise, one of the cards yielded the top prize: $555,555.

“I was so nervous I just wanted to cry,” she told California Lottery.

Riding high on her victory, Ms Dominguez picked up some more scratch cards a few days later. Once again, one of the $5 cards yielded a six-figure win – this time of $100,000.

The teenager told California Lottery she wants to use her earnings to go shopping and buy herself a new car.

Ms Dominguez’s record is perhaps only bested by Rodney Meadows, a fellow Californian who won the state lottery twice in one day in 2015. Mr Meadows scored $1,000 on his first card, and a whopping $10m just minutes later.

Earlier this year, a couple in Virginia won their state’s lottery three times in one month.

Calvin and Zatera Spencer won $1m in the Powerball lottery in March, and two weeks later won $50,000 on a Pick 4 game. They added another $1m to their earnings by buying a winning scratch card.

And they don’t plan on stopping.

“We're not finished yet,” Mr Spencer told Virginia Lottery.
