The Los Angeles County District Attorney declined to file sexual assault charges against the actor on Tuesday. The case, involving an adult male, was presented to Los Angeles prosecutors in April and had been under review. The nature and origin of the accusation were not disclosed.
The district attorney also announced that it had declined to file sexual misconduct charges against Steven Seagal and Anthony Anderson. In the case of Seagal the district attorney's office also cited the state’s statute of limitations, while a victim who accused Anderson refused to cooperate with investigators.
The cases were reviewed by a task force established to evaluate sex abuse allegations in the entertainment industry in the wake of dozens of women accusing disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein and others of abuse amid the nationwide #MeToo movement.
The Los Angeles District Attorney's office said in August that it was reviewing a second sexual assault accusation against Spacey, but declined to give details. The case is still under review.
The Academy Award-winning actor has lost several roles since he was first publicly accused of sexual misconduct in October, and was fired from the hit Netflix series House of Cards after several employees accused him of inappropriate behaviour.
Spacey is also under investigation in London over six claims of sexual assault over 22 years. Spacey has not commented on the claims.
Actor Anthony Rapp was the first to make a claim against Spacey, alleging he was 14-years-old when 26-year-old Spacey made a sexual advance in 1986.
Mr Spacey apologised to Mr Rapp in October for “deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour” and later released a statement saying he was seeking unspecified treatment. He has not commented on the other allegations.
