One person has been killed after at least 47 cars collided in a pile-up on a Missouri motorway.

Several more drivers were left injured in the crash in Kansas City, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol (MSHP).

A motorist stranded amid the chaos filmed vehicles which sped past him and crashed into the pile-up moments later.

Cars, lorries and tractor trailers were all involved in the collision, which took place near the Oak Grove Interchange on Friday afternoon.

Some drivers were left stranded in snow as authorities closed the road and emergency services worked through wintry conditions to assist those affected.

Temperatures on Friday plummeted to around -10C, according to the MSHP.

"Please stay home all weekend if you don't have to go out," said a spokesperson for the organisation.

"All roadways are still treacherous."

Several other collisions were reported in the region, according to WIBW.
