A teacher and a female student were taken to hospital the wake of the incident at Noblesville West Middle School. A male student has been detained and is considered the suspect, according to Noblesville police chief Kevin Jowitt.
Mr Jowitt added that there had been a "secondary threat" communicated to Noblesville High School - and police are monitoring that situation.
Indiana University Health spokeswoman Danielle Sirilla said the adult victim was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and the child was taken to Riley Hospital for Children.
Bryant Orem, a spokesman for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said that the suspect is believed to have acted alone.
Noblesville Fire Department tweeted that it also in the scene. Helicopter footage showed students being led from the school, with Mr Orem saying they were being taken to Noblesville High School's gym, where they could be picked up by family members.
One of the parents who rushed to the school was Erica Higgins, who told WTHR-TV that she learned of the shooting from a relative who called her at home. “I just want to get my arms around my boy,” she said.
The Indiana State Teachers Association, through its president, Teresa Meredith called the gun violence "senseless".
“Our hearts go out to the students, educators, families and community members of Noblesville who this morning faced a senseless act of gun violence at Noblesville West Middle School," Ms Meredith said.
"This national crisis has landed in our backyard," she added. "We all have a responsibility to keep our kids safe from violence, and it’s unconscionable that they live in fear that one day their school may be next. When is enough, enough?"
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, said that he and other local officials were "monitoring" the situation while on a flight back to the state from Europe. Dozens of state police officers had been made available to work with local police.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this horrible situation,” Mr Holcomb added.
Noblesville, which is about 20 miles (32km) northeast of Indianapolis, is home to about 50,000 people. The middle school has about 1,300 students.
The attack comes a week after an attack at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas, that killed eight students and two teachers.
