The grandmother was using a pedestrian crossing on a green light when a driver made a left turn and hit her, catapulting her into the air, and causing her to land on the street, police said in a release.
The woman was left with a brain bleed, broken neck, and broken pelvis, among other injuries as a result of the incident, and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
“The driver did stop, exited the vehicle, however, fled the scene without rendering aid or identifying himself,” police said.
Investigators have released footage of the incident and announced a $25,000 reward for information regarding the identification of the driver.
The woman’s daughter made an emotional plea for the driver to turn himself in to authorities at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
“I want to tell the driver to please turn himself in because my mother didn’t deserve to be laying down on the ground without any assistance,” she told reporters.
“This person needs to turn themself in. I’m begging you to please turn yourself in.”
The vehicle involved was a Mercedes Benz sedan possible 2003-2006 model C 230 with dealer-issued paper plates, police said.
Shocking footage of the incident shows the woman being propelled into the air and landing on the ground. A man can then be seen approaching the scene briefly in the aftermath but then walks away.
“You see the suspect, wearing a black tank top and black shorts, walk up to the victim after the collision, then walk away and flee the scene,” the police department tweeted.
“At the end, you hear the victim asking the suspect to turn himself in,” they added.
The man was described by police as a 35 or 40-year-old black male who is six feet four inches tall and around 180 pounds with braided short blond hair. Investigators also noted that he has a tattoo of the number one on the left side of his face.
Police are asking that anyone who has any information regarding the vehicle, driver, or collision contact Detective Jose De Leon of CTD, at (213) 833-3713.
“Drivers are reminded to drive at a safe speed and if you become involved in a collision, you should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify yourself,” police said.
