Five ways Marco Rubio's campaign can takedown Jeb Bush
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Before the battle to be big boss begins, the first hurdle that must be overcome is to win over the Republican party. Here are five reasons why Marco Rubio will annihilate Jeb Bush:
1. Evidence of approval for Mr Rubio’s candidacy came last week, when billionaire Paul Singer, one of the party’s most sought-after fundraisers signed on with the senator’s campaign.
2. Mr Rubio has outlined a hard-line position on social issue like abortion. He opposed exceptions to abortion prohibitions in cases of rape and incest and he's supported legislation that includes such exceptions in an effort to reduce the number of abortions.
Mr Bush supports legislation to ban abortion after 20 weeks, making exceptions for the life of the mother, rape, or incest. In August 2015, he said, "My record as a pro-life governor is not in dispute. I am completely pro-life and I believe that we should have a culture of life."
3. Mr Rubio isn't from the Bush family. If Jeb was to be elected President, he would be the third family member to hold that coveted position. It's safe to say that America, probably the world, is tired of hearing the that name.
4. Mr Bush has been criticized by some Tea Party members as being insufficiently conservative, as he supports positions on immigration and the Common Core State Standards Initiative, common curriculum standards that are unpopular with some conservatives.
5. Mr Rubio is among his party’s sharpest critics of the policies of the Obama administration. He knows that identification with the Senate is toxic to many of the Republican voters who will have a significant influence on who is nomiated for the presidential election.
