From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. This is the moment firefighters rescued a baby boy after he wandered onto the roof of his home in Philadelphia.
In mobile phone footage captured by neighbour Jacob Durant, the toddler is seen standing on the edge of the roof.
In one heart-stopping moment the little boy reaches out for the ladder as the firefighters climb up to rescue him.
“As the baby was on the roof me and some more people in the neighbourhood [were] trying to keep the baby’s attention on us instead of the baby moving around,” Mr Durant said.
“We were trying to prevent him from falling off the roof while the firefighters got their ladder up there and a policeman can come through on the other side – the inside,” he explained.
“He didn’t really seem too scared or anything. He’s only two years old, I believe, so with the mindset he really don’t know what’s going on,” Mr Durant said, adding, “Luckily, the great thing is he didn’t fall off the roof while reaching out for the ladder”.
It appears that the child was left home alone and somehow made his way out onto the roof of the house but he was safely brought down.
