A senior aide to Donald Trump took to twitter to make a threat against Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly.

Following a heated exchange between Ms Kelly and former house speaker and Trump ally Newt Gingrich, Mr Trump’s social media adviser Dan Scavino posted a warning on social media.

“Megyn Kelly made a total fool out of herself tonight - attacking Donald Trump. Watch what happens to her after this election is over.”

Twitter users replied that the message was a “threat” and called for the police to investigate. The Trump campaign could not be immediately reached for comment.

The tweet came as Ms Kelly interviewed Mr Gingrich, which ended on hostile terms.

He accused her of being “fascinated with sex” after she said that if the women accusing Mr Trump of sexual assault were telling the truth, then Mr Trump would be a “sexual predator”.

The interview ended with Ms Kelly telling Mr Gingrich to “work on his anger issues”.

The Fox News anchor told Jimmy Fallon that she had suffered a “dark year” as a result of her clash with the Trump campaign.

Problems started when she asked the candidate tough questions at a primary season debate on his insulting comments about women.

Trump adviser and Fox News colleague Sean Hannity also recently took to twitter to attack Ms Kelly, calling her a Hillary Clinton supporter.

Ms Kelly posted a picture of the two of them, smiling, alongside the caption: "We’re Irish. It’s complicated."
