From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. In the spirit of Independence Day, Donald Trump Jr shared some artwork of his father on Instagram and attempted to “take out" yet another term created by millennials.
The first son posted a cartoon image of Donald Trump sprinkling red, white and blue stars over his arm in a plain white t-shirt and black sunglasses. The president's pose and attire was symbolic of Salt Bae, a Turkish internet superstar and chef with steakhouses in Miami and New York City, who is known for sprinkling salt onto meat in an elaborate fashion and recreating his pose with celebrities.
Mr Trump Jr captioned the photo using the term "Freedom Bae," replacing "Salt bae" with a term he apparently created for his father, who he described as "sprinkling a bit of freedom for all of us to enjoy.”
The first son jokingly added that he was continuing his “quest to take out pop culture terms,” after recently stirring controversy over his use of the phrase “lit” on social media.
"OMG! Just when you thought this week couldn’t get more lit… I give you Anthony Kennedy's retirement from #SCOTUS," he tweeted a week ago.
Mr Trump Jr received backlash online for using “lit” – a term commonly used to describe something that’s fun and exciting – for a news event as polarising as the Supreme Court justice’s retirement.
The post spurred headlines from millennial news sites like Mashable reading, "Donald Trump Jr. has officially killed the word 'lit.'"
The president’s son also shared another cartoon of the commander in chief holding a firearm in one arm and a bald eagle in the other, standing over wreckage as a US flag flutters behind him. "This is amazing," he wrote in a caption.
This is far from the first time Mr Trump Jr has shared MAGA-themed memes and cartoons across his social media channels. The first son regularly posts commentary about the president’s White House tenure, often mocking the Democratic Party and critics of his father.
