Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A man shot two little girls, fatally wounding one of them, and then killed himself after holding their mother captive for three days and repeatedly raping her because she tried to end their relationship, according to authorities.

Onemeous Phillion James, 46, killed himself on Monday inside the couple's home in Perris, California after the woman fled to a neighbour's home for help.

The girls, ages 2 and 6, were shot in the head. The younger girl, identified as James' daughter, died yesterday, the Riverside County Coroner's office said.

The other girl was the woman's daughter from another relationship. She remains in a critical condition in hospital says Sheriff's Sgt. Perri Feinstein-Portales.

James bound the woman with duct tape and held her that way through the weekend, sexually assaulting her numerous times, Feinstein-Portales said.

On Monday the woman convinced James that she would not run away if she was released, but she went to a neighbour's home and called for help.

Deputies found James dead on a bed. The two girls were found shot in the same room.

Perris is about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
