From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A majority of Americans think the federal government and president Donald Trump are doing a poor job handling the coronavirus pandemic.
A new poll conducted by SSRS and commissioned by CNN shows that 55% of Americans believe the federal government has done a poor job preventing the spread of Covid-19.
The poll conducted between 3 April and 6 April showed that 41% felt the federal government has done a good job and 4% has no opinion on their performance.
Their last poll, conducted between 24 March and 29 March, showed that 48% thought the federal government had done a good job, 47% thought they had done a poor job and 5% didn’t have an opinion.
The only previous data on the federal government’s performance was from March 4 to March 7 and it showed 49% thought the federal government were doing a good job and 43% thought they were doing a poor job.
CNN have polled Americans twice on whether they approve or disapprove of Mr Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
In a poll conducted between 4 March to 7 March, they found that 41% approved, 48% disapproved and 11% had no opinion.
However, a month later in a poll conducted between 3 April to 6 April only 3% said they had no opinion, while 45% said they approved and 52% said they disapproved.
On Tuesday, Mr Trump threatened to pull funding from the World Health Organisation (WHO) before rolling back the statement, saying that the idea is up for consideration.
“We’re going to put a hold on money spent for WHO,” he said, before adding that “they seem to be very China-centric. And we have to look into that so we’ll look into it we pay for a majority of the money that they get,” the president added.
According to a tracking project hosted by Johns Hopkins University, upwards of 399,029 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the US. The death toll has reached at least 12,911.
