Police have released video footage that shows the arrest of Dylann Roof, the young man charged with nine counts of murder over the shooting of nine black church members in Charleston.

The footage shows the 21-year-old Mr Roof being detained by officers close to the city of Shelby in North Carolina, about 245 miles from Charleston, located in neighbouring South Carolina.

The footage shows being Mr Roof being detained around 15 hours after the shooting dead of nine church members who were attending bible study at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The day Mr Roof was arrested a racist online 'manifesto', believed to be written by him, was discovered online. It contained a pro-segregation world view and said Charleston had been chosen because of its history and because it one had the largest black population in the state.

“The event that truly awakened me was the Trayvon Martin case. I kept hearing and seeing his name, and eventually I decided to look him up. I read the Wikipedia article and right away I was unable to understand what the big deal was," it says.

Referring to the unnamed black Florida teenager who was shot dead by a white neighbour, George Zimmerman, it adds: “It was obvious that Zimmerman was in the right.”
