From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. CCTV footage shows a stand off between an armed robber and a fearless store owner, who shamed him into leaving the store almost empty handed.

The video shows the thief, with his face half-covered, making several attempts to obtain the contents of the till. Instead of being afraid of the robber's gun, the irate shopkeeper decides to reprimand him.

The argument lasted for over six minutes only for the shopkeeper to convince the gunman to put away his weapon. He then gave the thief a few dollars and sent him out.

Commenting on the footage, Matt Fillenwarth, Assistant Chief of the Greenwood Police said: “He’s lecturing him. He’s pointing his finger, like a parent would… and starts lecturing the robbery suspect on how what he's doing is wrong and people work hard for their money and he shouldn't be stealing."

Police said the shopkeeper was lucky to be alive and that his behavious was not to be encouraged.

"It's certainly not worth losing your life over a few hundred dollars," Fillenwarth said.

Speaking to Eyewitness News, the unnamed store owner said that he wasn’t trying to be a hero and recognized that he shouldn’t have argued with an armed robber.
