George W Bush described yesterday's terrorist attacks on New York and Washington as an"act of war".
The president said terrorists had launched an "an attack on freedom and democracy", he said he was asking Congress to approve emergency funding to pay for rescue work and aid for New York and Washington and to "protect our national security".
He again warned that there would be "no safe harbour" for terrorists
"This will be a monumental struggle of good versus evil. But good will prevail," the president said. He said the United States was prepared to spend "whatever it takes."
