A US judge's decision to remand a retired British businessman in custody while he awaits trial on arms dealing charges was "heartbreaking", his wife said last night.
Elaine Tappin said it was an "outrage" that her 65-year-old husband Christopher has been refused bail after he was extradited to the United States two weeks ago.
A spokesman for the US Attorney's office in the western district of Texas said Tappin was denied bail because he "posed a flight risk," while Judge Robert Castaneda added that he was concerned about a discrepancy in Mr Tappin's financial statement.
