Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of the late pop star Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, is “awake” after months in a medically induced coma, her father said at his concert.

Ms Brown has been in a coma since shortly after she was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub on 31 January in her Georgia home. Initial reports suggested that she may not survive, but she has since been moved from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta to a rehabilitation centre.

Her condition apparently has improved in the rehab centre to the point that Bobby Brown said over the weekend “I can say today, my baby’s awake. She’s watching me.”

Mr Brown’s statement differs from other statements made by the family about the young woman’s condition. In the last few weeks, Bobbi Kristina’s grandmother indicated that she had not improved much since moving to rehab.

The Brown family lawyer has discouraged people from believing some statements coming from the Houston side of the family about Ms Brown’s condition, as that side of the family has not been permitted to visit her.
