Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Watch again as Karine Jean-Pierre and John Kirby held the daily White House press briefing on Tuesday, 24 October 2023.

It comes after president Joe Biden said that Hamas should release the hostages it kidnapped in its deadly attack on Israel before any ceasefire in Gaza is agreed upon.

Mr Biden made the remarks at an event on Monday, 23 October 2023, in response to a question from Andrew Feinberg, The Independent’s White House correspondent.

“We should get... We should have a ceasefire, not a ceasefire... we should have these hostages released and then we can talk,” said Mr Biden in response to Feinberg’s question.

Elsewhere Donald Trump will face Michael Cohen at his $250m civil fraud trial in New York.

Mr Cohen, the former president’s attorney and “fixer”, will testify in the case today in New York’s Superior Court.

Mr Trump called Mr Cohen a “proven liar” in a statement to the press outside of the courtroom.
