From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Barack Obama “got short changed” for a room in his new house, according to his wife Michelle.
Appearing on The Ellen Show for her first interview since leaving the White House, the former First Lady revealed that her husband “is really hating” on their daughter Sasha because “she killed it” in their new house, while he has to live with “the smallest room”.
The 16-year old has “got a two room suite with a living room area and a bedroom area” that she designed herself, but her dad “has got the smallest room for his office”, she told host Ellen DeGeneres.
She added: “He doesn’t have enough closet space."
The Obama’s oldest daughter, Malia, also seems to have missed out on a good deal, having started at Harvard University last August.
“Malia’s not there, she’s got a room up in the attic somewhere," Ms Obama said. “She’s away at college, you don’t waste room on college kids.”
The family stayed in Washington DC, “down the street from the White House”, so that their youngest daughter could complete her education.
“We live in Washington. Sasha is a Junior in High School and we wanted her to finish in the school that she’s been in since the second grade”.
Talking to the popular chat show host, Ms Obama joked that things are very different from their family's time in the White House.
"We're just hanging out. I wake up when I want to wake up. I got myself all gusseyed [sic] up to come here. Got myself out of the basement.
“It's odd, I now have a door and a door bell”, she said, “people trip out when I come to the door and I open it.”
The family’s pet Portuguese water dogs have also had to get used to some changes, she said.
Ms Obama said: “Bo and Sunny, don’t know what a doorbell is. So when it rings they just sit there like ‘huh, I never heard that before.”
Despite moving out of the White House only a year ago, Ms Obama said that she didn't miss the state residence and is happy to be settled again with her family.
She said: “The thing I learned in those eight years is that home is where you make it. We were in the White House for 8 years but it wasn’t the house, it was us in it: our values, our love for each other, we just moved that to another house”.
