From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The Rev Phyllis Sortor was kidnapped by five men from her workplace in Nigeria’s Kogi state, authorities said. The kidnappers have demanded a ransom of 60 million Naira, or about $301,500.
Initial reports do not think terrorist organisation Boko Haram is behind the kidnapping, as Kogi state is far from the area controlled by the group. Boko Haram has been involved in several high-profile kidnappings in the past year.
Ms Sortor runs an organisation that aims to educate children of the Fulani tribe, CNN reported. The five men – two of whom were masked – reportedly scaled a wall of the school, fired shots into the air and took Ms Sortor.
The US Embassy in Nigeria and the FBI have been notified about the kidnapping.
