The entire election campaign now appears to hinge on the result in the state, with the latest polls giving Bush a slight edge.
Exit polls had indicated that the state had backed the Democratic candidate, but as more results were counted, Governor Bush appeared to be back in the running for the state.
It is possible that the final result will not be known for much longer, with late postal votes possibly deciding the winner.
