A man has been charged with murdering a young British cricketer in Trinidad.

Adrian St John, 22, died on Sunday after armed robbers attacked him as he was driving through San Juan with two female passengers.

He was reportedly ambushed he pulled over to pick up someone up being robbed at gunpoint before one of the assailants opened fire after ordering him to drive away.

Cricketer shot dead

Police said 24-year-old Maldon Pascall had been charged with the murder after a witness to the shooting picked him out of an identity parade on Thursday.

Officials told the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian he would appear in court on Monday, while a second suspect remains under arrest.

Mr St John was the captain of the Chris Gayle Cricket Academy and worked as a recruitment consultant in London.

He was due to return home from Trinidad on Tuesday but had reportedly been considering moving to the Caribbean to play for the West Indies.

His uncle, Ian Campbell, told Sky News that the family was “very proud” of his nephew, who had a degree in philosophy and history.

“He was just loveable,” he added. ”He was a balanced kid looking forward to a bright future.

“Cricket was a passion from an early age and he was very good at it."

West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle was among the sportsmen paying tribute, writing on Twitter: “Such sad news to hear. My condolences to his family & friends.”

One of Mr St John’s friends, Tommy Smith, described him as “one of the funniest and nicest people”.

”In utter shock to hear that one of my good friends Adrian has passed away,” he wrote.

“It was absolute pleasure to play with you pal, gone but never forgotten. Rest in peace Adrian St John.”

The Dulwich-based Alleyn Cricket Club said members were “devastated” by his death, adding that he represented them 85 times between 2009 and 2014.
