A 12-year-old girl allegedly attempted to poison her mother with bleach because her iPhone was confiscated has been detained by police.

The girl from Boulder, Colorado, who has not been named, tried to kill her mother on two separate occasions, police said.

Initially, the mother thought her daughter had not rinsed out the glass properly, as she noticed the smell of bleach coming from the breakfast smoothie she was drinking.

It was only after the woman again smelt bleach in a water carafe in her bedroom that she confronted her daughter.

The daughter reportedly wanted to kill her mother as revenge for taking away her iPhone, according to the local sheriff’s office.

The woman alerted the authorities at the Boulder Community Hospital. She is no longer in hospital and her condition is said to be fine.

The girl was detained at the Boulder County Juvenile Centre on two counts of attempted first-degree murder on Friday.

“She had pre-planned this a couple different times,” Sergeant Bill Crist told ABC News.

An investigation is on-going and the District Attorney’s office will decide what charges to pursue.
