President Robert Mugabe welcomed Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on a state visit to Zimbabwe yesterday, a meeting of two leaders united in fierce opposition to the West.

The Zimbabwe Iran Joint Commission said the two nations were committed to "the promotion of peace and stability in their respective regions". The two countries agreed to form joint ventures in the agriculture, manufacturing, mining and water management sectors.

Iran is the biggest exhibitor at a trade fair which Mr Ahmadinejad is scheduled to open in Bulawayo today.
