'1,500 political prisoners held'

BANGKOK (AP) - Amnesty International says Burma's military junta may be holding 1,500 or more political prisoners despite the recent release of more than 500 others. In a report released today, the group said: 'Those detained include students, artists, monks and even children - one 14-year-old boy sentenced to 13 years in prison for putting up posters in his school.'

The report said unofficial sources claimed more than 3,000 people were imprisoned for political reasons in the second half of 1989 and more have been detained since then in an attempt to crush opposition. It added that the releases offered some hope for a reform of human rights practices in Burma.
