Workman injured in Brighton pier blast

Health and Safety Executive officials have begun an investigation into the cause of an explosion and fire which badly damaged the Palace Pier at Brighton in East Sussex.

The blast ripped through an electricity sub-station below decking at the sea end of the pier, injuring an electrician.

He was taken to hospital in Brighton suffering from severe face and neck injuries, and was later transferred to the special burns unit at Queen Victoria hospital, East Grinstead, West Sussex.
