Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

After more than two amazing years of rapid expansion to our global readership, we have decided to drop the The Independent’s paywall in the US and Canada. From today, anyone in the world who comes to the site will be able to enjoy as much of it as they want.

The whole editorial staff is very excited about welcoming new readers. Back at the end of 2012, we had around 16 to 17 million people coming to the site each month. Now that figure is 54 million. It means a lot to us that our journalism reaches so many people.

North America, as a major English-speaking region, has always been on our radar, and at the end of last year we started to put together a team and open a small office in New York. It’s already picking up momentum, and we're hiring more reporters there. Regular visitors will also see some nice platform changes happening over the next few months to make our North American readers feel more at home, but let's not spoil the surprises here.

You can also discover our more US-focused articles on two new social media accounts. Like us at facebook.com/IndependentUS and follow our US Twitter account, @IndyUSA.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your loyalty to The Independent, and we hope that you will continue to visit and enjoy our quality and truly independent journalism. If you have any comments to make or have a query about your subscription please email me via customerservices@independent.co.uk.

Thanks,
