England's youngest chess grandmaster, Michael Adams, 20, has reached the final of the Interpolis international tournament in Tilburg, the Netherlands, by defeating Ilya Smirin of Israel.

Anatoly Karpov, Nigel Short and Jan Timman, the favourites, all lost in early rounds. The world number two, Vassily Ivanchuk, was eliminated by Gata Kamsky in the quarter final.

In Belgrade, Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky drew the 24th game of their match. Fischer leads by eight wins to four.
