Government measures to help the unemployed will be 'dwarfed' by up to 500,000 job losses in the public sector in 1993-94, the non-aligned Employment Policy Institute says. In past recessions the state sector has mopped up unemployment but this 'safety valve' is under threat from government cutbacks, the institute says in its latest Economic Report, published yesterday.
