Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A dentist told today how he only gave his approval to his daughter's wedding on the condition that his future son-in-law agreed to fix his terrible teeth.

Years of neglect had left Gordon Taylor's teeth stained and crooked.

So when the 32-year-old asked Dr Philip Lewis for his daughter's hand in marriage, he was given the ultimatum of having his smile sorted.

Mr Taylor is now beginning extensive dental surgery but for the wedding with 36-year-old Sarah he wore a cosmetic tooth cap to give him a nice smile for the big day in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

Dr Lewis said: "I have to say the thought of my daughter walking down the aisle to Gordon with his teeth the way they were was not a good one.

"Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, and if there's a day in your life you want your smile to look your best it's your wedding day."

Mr Taylor said: "I never meant to neglect my teeth, I guess it was just the lifestyle I was leading.

"When I met Sarah, coming from a family business where her father is a dentist I think they notice it more than others.

"I'm really looking forward to the end result. It will make such a difference to my looks and confidence."

His new wife said: "I'm thrilled Gordon's been undergoing this dental work.

"I will always love him regardless, but I know the finished look will certainly please him, as well as our family and friends."
