Jack Clemo was born in 1916 near St Austell in Cornwall. His first collection of poems The Clay Verge appeared in 1951, and since then has published many others. He was awarded a Civil List pension in 1961, and an honorary D Litt degree in 1981 from Exeter University. This poem appears in his latest collection, Approach to Murano, published by Bloodaxe at pounds 5.95.
