Hubert Witheford was born in New Zealand in 1921 and worked as a civil servant in the Prime Minister's Office and other places. In 1953 with his wife and son he moved to England, where he joined the Central Office of Information. This poem appears in his seventh collection, A Blue Monkey for the Tomb, published this month by Faber at pounds 5.99.
