Alistair Elliot was born in 1932 in Liverpool and has since travelled the world, being educated in the United States, Edinburgh and Oxford. His previous collection My Country was published in 1989 by Carcanet and received a Poetry Book Society Recommendation. This poem is from his new collection Turning the Stones (Carcanet; pounds 6.95).
