Jackie Kay was born in Scotland in 1961. This poem is taken from her new collection Other Lovers (Bloodaxe, pounds 5.95). She will be reading at the Purcell Room on 11 November at 7.30pm as part of Out of the Margins, a celebration of African, South Asian and Caribbean writers in Britain (the South Bank Centre, London, 11-14 November).
