Jeffrey Wainwright teaches at Manchester Metropolitan University and is a part-time writer. His previous collections include Hearts Desire (Carcanet, 1978) and Selected Poems (Carcanet, 1985). This poem is from a 24- poem sequence called Free Rein, due to be published by Carcanet in a new collection The Red-Headed Pupil in May.
