Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A FATHER-of-four has become the second man to be killed in 48 hours after confronting burglars while protecting other people's homes during the Bank holiday weekend, writes Graham Moorby.

Malcolm Albrighton, 48, was punched to the ground by a fleeing burglar in Atherstone, Warwickshire, and died in hospital last night, 28 hours after the attack. The former soldier had been walking home with an elderly friend from a local pub when they heard a burglar alarm ring. Mr Albrighton chased and caught one of the men who turned and punched him hard in the face. Mr Albrighton was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital with a fractured skull.

On Saturday, Leslie Winder, 52, was stabbed to death by a burglar as he checked his daughter's home in Barmston, Washington, Tyne and wear, while she was on holiday.

An anonymous local businessman has anonymously put up a pounds 5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of his killer.
